The Freelancer

Creation and Advancement

Freelancer Creation

Freelancers start from somewhere.

Step 1: Discussion and Concept

The most crucial step is also your first. It is always best to talk with your Gamemaster and the rest of the team (the other Players) to decide what you should build as a Freelancer.

Their input will help keep a balanced team and to prevent conflicts, but in the end, the choice is yours. Start by thinking of what kind of Freelancer you would like to play; do they have an interesting story of how they became an Freelancer? Do they have an odd skill set that would distinguish themselves from others?

Step 2: Power Level

The power level of the Freelancer and the rest of the team determines the overall difficulty level of the campaign. The Gamemaster sets the power level of the game.

A low power level means everything is an uphill battle. The Freelancer has a limited amount of experience points to buy features. And fewer points for Attributes. A standard power level is balanced and most campaigns are at this power level. Heroic power levels have Freelancers stronger than most everything else they encounter with more starting XP and higher Attributes. Epic power level makes most everything in the game is trivial with a lot of starting XP and very high Attributes.

Step 3: Choosing a Species

There are an untold number of species that roam the galaxy. You may pick a pre-generated one, or you can sit with your Gamemaster and create a new, unique species and find their place in the universe.

Species Features

Your species determines many of the starting features and abilities of the Freelancer.

No Cultural Monoliths

Many species have strong ties to their home civilization, however, no culture is a monolith and no species is beholden to those cultural norms.

Step 4: Determine Attributes

All your Attributes start at 1 plus any bonuses from your species.

The Core Rules discusses what your Attributes do in more detail but in general Attributes fall into three categories. Physical Attributes are Attributes that affect your physical being such as how strong a Freelancer is or how healthy they can be. Mental Attributes are more focused on cognition and the ability to process information. Will Attributes have no real physical analogue but represents how a Freelancer reacts to and interacts with their environment.

Physical

Strength is how strong you are and is great for more physical Freelancers or Freelancers that like to get in close combat. Agility is how much control you have over your body and is used to determine how fast you can react to things and how steady you are. Fortitude represents how tough you are in general. Good Fortitudes help shrug off damage and other physical effects.

Mental

Knowledge is your ability to retain information presented. Cleverness is your ability to adapt to change and to understand things around you. Finally, there is Awareness which is just your general comprehension of your environment.

Will

Intuition is how well you can extrapolate from incomplete information about your environment. Sanity is the strength of your mind and how hard it would be to break it down in stressful situations. Lastly, Ego is your determination and ability to impose yourself onto your environment.

Starting Attributes

Roll the die according to the power level of the campaign. You may put those points into any Attribute.

Step 5: Select Skills

You start with a number of experience points to buy features, you can also gain flaws that grant bonus XP.

Step 5: Select Features

You start with a number of experience points to buy features, you can also gain flaws that grant bonus XP.

Step 6: Select Your Gear

Your equipment selection gives you the tools you need for your missions. Selection of your gear is both a personal and functional choice.

Advancement

As a Freelancer continues their career, they become more experienced.

Experience Points

As you complete missions and defeat threats, you will gain experience points or XP. This can be spent on features.

Saving or Investing

This is up to the Gamemaster to exactly how they wish this is done, however, to save XP allows you to build up points to buy a better feature later on while investing XP is putting build points earned into a feature until there is enough points to actually acquire the feature or stage.

Prestige

Prestige will be further detailed in the Equipment section, but in simple terms, it’s how well known you are and how well your renown can grant you access to equipment and services. Every Freelancer starts with 1 Prestige and gains Prestige by completing missions and defeating threats.
